Wild And Wacky Night In The First Round Of The US Open Cup

When US Soccer made their format changes to the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup, the hope was to make this cup competition more meaningful than ever before. But after what happened in Round 1 Proper is making your head spin with delight and joy.

The statistics are just coming straight out of left field and then some when you have one game that was a blowout, to four going into extra time and a grand total of 29 cards being issued (22 bookings and 7 sending offs) you started to think you were in Atlantic City or Las Vegas.

But by far this has been the most entertaining opening round of the US Open Cup that I have ever seen including some big time upsets from the amateur sides below the PDL. Get ready for the results folks, because this US Open Cup tournament is going to get wilder and crazier by the week.

Milwaukee Bavarians 1:3 Des Moines Menace (AET)

This match was strange from the word go as the bookings were flying all over the place. David Caban of Milwaukee goes into book in the 18th minute and then his team mate Cyril Simmons converts for the early lead. But just as they were reaching halftime Andrew Stone got into a fight and was show a straight red in the 45th minute as his team mate Chris Madsen was shown a yellow.

The Milwaukee Bavarians going a man down for the rest of the match was trying to hold up a one goal lead till Caban forgetting he was already in the book got his second of the match and sent off in the 66th minute, putting the Bavarians down to nine men.

The Des Moines Menace got their equalizer in the 70th minute from Husref Jupic and the craziness continued. More booking for both sides as Kelmend Islami of Milwaukee gets carded in the 73rd, and Taylor Diem for Des Moines in the 80th. But the next sending off came from the Menace as Jubril Lawal made a reckless challenge to put his side down to ten men.

But it all ended in extra time as Lebogang Moloto got a brace in the 103rd & 108th minute putting the Des Moines Menace into the second round.

Laredo Heat 4:2 ASC New Stars (AET)

A little of tit for tat was going on in this match as these Texas sides were going at it with each other. Laredo got a penalty and Ernesto Serrato converts in the 11th, with Lukas Simon equalizing for ASC in the 28th.

Just as the second half got started it was Irving Villanueva with the go ahead goal in the 47th for Laredo and it looked like they were going to hold on. Marcos Carrizales was sent off in the 60th minute putting them down to ten men, but Peter Kozlowski got the next equalizer inside second half stoppage time.

But in extra time it was Palcide Buduri who scored his brace in the 99th and 119th minute to push the PDL side into the next round as they travel to San Antonio and face the Scorpions.

Michigan Bucks 6:0 Jersey Shore Boca

This match was over from start to finish. Even though it was Nick Tarquinio who got sent off in the 17th minute for a dangerous tackle and put Jersey Shore down to ten men, this match was all Michigan. Stefan St. Louis scored a brace (31st & 38th) with Nerman Crnkic’s goal (36th) in-between.

Then Thomas Catalano in the 74th, Ethan Miller in the 85 and Bin Ogunyemi ended the scoring in the 89th minute. But one thing is for sure, this match was never in doubt unlike some of the others.
